Claire Lamarre-Niemi

I am a Montreal-based furniture designer and undergraduate Design student at Concordia University with a background in visual arts and independent publishing. I founded Bootlegger Magazine (2021-2026), a self-supported art publication. I have spent the past five years building this project to spotlight and uplift local creative youth, with a particular focus on emerging and underrepresented artists.

After transitioning from graphic design to furniture design, my practice shifted toward materiality, functionality, comfort and craftsmanship. Influenced by the principles of the Bauhaus, I aim to merge handmade traditions, particularly textile and furnishing-related, with practical design, creating objects for the home and other lived-in spaces that emphasize utility as well as the sensory richness of craft.

Accessibility and sustainability are central concerns in my work. I research and experiment with repurposing, recycled materials, and DIY fabrication methods to reduce production costs and environmental impact, while making well-designed furniture more attainable and responsible.

My recent works focus on environments of care, particularly health and rehabilitation spaces. I am interested in examining how recovery intersects with the furnished environment, and how thoughtful, beautiful, and intentional furniture can support healing.
